Introduction to Making Weight and Competition Week

Many competitors in combat sports work hard to achieve the most muscular and lean physique possible within a given weight division. In addition to this, a large proportion utilize acute weight loss techniques—commonly referred to as "cutting weight"—before weigh-ins, aiming to temporarily lower their body mass to qualify for a lighter weight division, which may allow them to face smaller opponents. This strategy is often employed alongside the goal of mitigating the adverse effects of weight cutting with nutritional recovery following weigh-in. Indirect evidence suggests that these practices can enhance competitive success. Therefore, if athletes are provided ample time for recovery after weigh-ins, employing strategic weight cutting strategies may offer an advantage in some contexts. Previously, we addressed chronic weight management (primarily focused on fat loss) and general training considerations. In this section, we will present evidence-based approaches for achieving acute weight loss, as well as the practical considerations during competition week and after.
