5.1 INTEGRATED PERFORMANCE: THE INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH

At the UFC Performance Institute, we strongly believe in an Interdisciplinary approach, not just a multidisciplinary one. While having a team of experts across multiple domains (strength and conditioning, sports medicine, performance nutrition etc.) working with an athlete is a great starting point, often, personal and professional biases will result in multiple solutions being devised for a single problem. For example, the strength and conditioning coach may prioritize physical fitness, while the sports medicine professional focuses on rehabilitation, alongside performance nutrition thinking inadequate fueling is an athlete’s key issue. Rather than working in silos, with every professional focusing only on their area of expertise, a better solution is for all stakeholders to come together, openly communicate their concerns and thoughts, and for everyone involved to agree on the unified path to move forward. This results in all of the performance support network better understanding the bigger picture, their part in the process, and how individual efforts can be integrated into an interdisciplinary solution.
