OUTLINE OF SPECIALIST SPORTS SCIENCE COURSE MODULES
Video: Specialist Sports Science Course Introduction (4 min)
Module 1 Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the physiological requirements, sporting demands, similarities and differences of combat sports
- Understand fatigue and limiting factors to performance in combat sports
- Understand common characteristics and profiles of combat sport athletes of different sports
Module 2 Learning Outcomes:
- Develop an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the neuromuscular-, sensory motor-, cardio respiratory systems
- Identify the various energy systems and when they predominate
- Gain an appreciation of the process of skill development
- Identify specific desired adaptations of all these systems in a combat sport context
Module 3 Learning Outcomes:
- Understand key characteristics of testing reliability, validity, and standardization
- Identify relevant assessments for the various physiological systems, and how to identify adaptations
- Gain familiarity with training load concepts
- Understand the measurement of sleep variables, and be able to provide recommendations to enhance sleep and recovery
Module 4 Learning Objectives:
- Understand evidenced based decision making
- Apply sports science principles to real-world scenarios
- Understand how theoretical principles are adjusted to promote athlete goals in a variety of different sports/ athletes
Module 5: Interdisciplinary Teamwork
- Understand how to act as an interdisciplinary team to promote performance enhancement with individual athletes.
- Understand how to develop effective interdisciplinary solutions in a group/team-based setting.
