OUTLINE OF INTERMEDIATE MMA COURSE MODULES

Level 2: Intermediate MMA Module Outline

Module 1 Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand the history of MMA/UFC and the evolution of the rules
  2. Identify how MMA fights are scored, and the implications for fighting/training
  3. Be able to classify the component techniques of MMA into discrete categories, and understand the connections between them
  4. Identify the various phases of a fighter’s preparation and development
  5. Be able to structure a periodized fight camp based on different training phases

Module 2 Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify the key components of coaching
  2. Gain an appreciation of the varied philosophies of different stages of fight camp
  3. Understand programming specifics and how priorities vary according to the phase of fight camp
  4. Understand the systems based training paradigm, and be able to develop a structured framework for athlete development

Module 3 Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify lifestyle and other factors, outside of fighting which can contribute to an athlete’s success
  2. Identify the changes in mindset throughout the different training phases
  3. Gain an appreciation for video analysis of opponents as well as our own athletes
  4. Identify key attributes of cornering, and develop a systematic structured approach to cornering
  5. Understand the importance of the athlete-coach relationship, and what factors contribute to success

Module 4 Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the strength and conditioning basics: fitness and fatigue, energy systems development, and the force-velocity curve
  2. Be able to identify contributing factors to injury and concussion, how to mitigate, and the various phases of rehabilitation
  3. Understand the nutrition basics relating to micro- and macro- nutrients, hydration, and weight loss.
  4. Understand the difference between internal vs external training load, and gain an appreciation of the relationship between training load and performance / injury

Module 5: Interdisciplinary Solutions

  1. Understand how to act as an interdisciplinary team to promote performance enhancement with individual athletes.
  2. Understand how to develop effective interdisciplinary solutions in a group/team-based setting.
