OUTLINE OF SPECIALIST SPORTS MEDICINE COURSE MODULES

Video: Specialist Sports Medicine Course Introduction (3 min)

Module 1 Learning Outcomes:

  1. Understand the components of- and integration of the- sports medicine team in a combat sports setting
  2. Understand the physiological requirements, sporting demands, similarities and differences of combat sports, and how this impacts injuries
  3. Identify the relevance of psychology in the injured athlete

Module 2 Learning Outcomes:

  1. Be able to identify key components of a sports injury and illness surveillance system
  2. Identify appropriate diagnostic tests for combat sport athletes
  3. Understand the importance of strength profiling
  4. Be able to conduct concussion screening
  5. Gain an appreciation of the relevance of psychological readiness

Module 3 Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify key components of injury mitigation
  2. Understand the measurement- and utility- of training load in combat sports
  3. Identify and utilize appropriate warm ups and therapeutic modalities

Module 4 Learning Objectives:

  1. Apply sports medicine principles to real-world scenarios
  2. Understand how theoretical principles are adjusted to promote athlete goals in a variety of different injuries

Module 5: Interdisciplinary Teamwork

  1. Understand how to act as an interdisciplinary team to promote performance enhancement with individual athletes.
  2. Understand how to develop effective interdisciplinary solutions in a group/team-based setting.
