INTRODUCTION TO 5 MODULES

Learning Outcomes

Module 1

  • You will understand the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in sports medicine. This includes understanding how the sports medicine team collaborates with strength and conditioning coaches, technical coaching staff, and the nutrition team to ensure an athlete is getting the appropriate loading during rehabilitation and is fueling appropriately to meet the energy demands of the physiological adaptations.
  • You will gain a deep knowledge and understanding of anatomy, which is a fundamental part of a sports medicine practitioner’s skillset. Not only will you learn the names of the body parts, but you will also be able to describe the location and movements of the body. You will learn the accompanying terminology that each practitioner must know to understand the basics of human anatomy, describe the movements of the body, and the relative position of body parts to each other.
  • You will understand the main interacting systems that make up the human body. This will provide you with a foundational understanding of the human body's systems and how they interact with each other, which is crucial for a sports medicine practitioner.

Module 2

  • You will understand the importance of a thorough assessment in sports medicine. This includes understanding how to gather information and identify impairments or dysfunctions across a variety of conditions or injuries. You will learn that failure to perform a thorough assessment can lead to missing vital clues to reach appropriate conclusions and formulate accurate diagnoses, which can greatly impact the management and outcomes for the athletes you work with.
  • You will learn how to assess and collect data to inform the next steps of injury or illness management in sporting individuals. This includes understanding how to use evidence-based practice principles to reach clinically sound decisions.
  • You will learn about the different types of injuries and the impact of injury on pain and function. This includes understanding the principles of orthopedic assessment and both subjective and objective assessment methods.
  • You will gain knowledge about immediate care assessment, including understanding the importance of rescuer safety, airway assessment, breathing, circulation, neurological disability, environment, and exposure.
  • You will understand when diagnostic imaging is necessary and learn about different types of imaging. This includes understanding the role of diagnostic imaging in concussion assessment.

Module 3

  • You will understand the importance of injury prevention and learn how to implement injury prevention strategies. This includes understanding the role of baseline orthopedic screening and the selection of appropriate training equipment.
  • You will learn about the importance of maintaining a good sleep routine and paying attention to diet in the context of sports medicine. You will understand how these factors can influence injury prevention and recovery.
  • You will gain knowledge about emergency response management and wound care. This includes understanding basic wound treatment and how to manage infections.
  • You will understand the principles of rehabilitation, including the definition of successful rehabilitation, types of rehabilitation, and the role of pain and tissue capacity in the rehabilitation process. You will also learn about different strategies that can be used in rehabilitation and the phases of rehabilitation.
  • You will learn about concussion management guidelines.

Module 4

  • You will understand the importance of orthopedic screening in the context of a baseline/pre-season screen. You will learn how to identify possible physical impairments that have contributed to an athlete's recent absence from participation due to injury. You will also learn how to use tools such as a goniometer or inclinometer to measure range of motion and record it as a baseline for comparison.
  • You will learn about the concept of interdisciplinary team working in sports medicine. This includes understanding how different professionals contribute to the overall health and performance of an athlete.
  • You will gain knowledge about acute injury management. This includes understanding how to manage specific injuries such as a lateral ankle sprain, ankle fracture, and concussion. You will also learn about the specific guidelines for managing these injuries.
  • You will learn how to apply orthopedic principles in sports medicine. This includes understanding how to use a head-to-toe approach to identify issues globally, rather than focus on more specific areas, which would be the case for a point of injury assessment.
  • You will understand the importance of self-care in identifying physical impairments and reducing the risk of future injury. This includes understanding how an athlete can improve their overall performance by staying actively involved in training.
